~ Semi-hiatus ~
It’s just…you see the Malfoys in the beginning and they’re so Malfoyish with their prominent air of superiority and devotion to Voldemort and you catch yourself dwelling on why they made the decision to be that way. And you think yes, it’s true they absolutely were bigoted through and through and that’s inexcusable, but then you wonder: did they side with Voldemort because they were truly that hateful or because it’s what they thought would keep them alive? And then you realize all signs point to the latter, because after Voldemort’s downfall, they acted as if their allegiance to the Dark Lord never existed and they made good with the Ministry by donating tons of money and becoming chummy with the Minister, all to help keep their “good” name and ultimately stay together. And when Voldemort comes back, Lucius is the first to fall to his knees because he needs to stay alive, he needs his family to stay alive.
But then the very thing they all fought so hard for over the years is threatened: themselves/each other. And the Malfoys begin to break down. That superiority is gone, that blessed Malfoy snarkery has shattered, and in its place is pure fear. Instead of Narcissa sniffing the air with her upturned nose, she’s placing a gentle hand around her scared husband’s wrist to soothe him when she can barely soothe herself. Instead of Draco tossing around insults at his peers, he’s attempting to kill a man he doesn’t stand a chance against just so he and his family can live or he’s sitting completely terrified because he just saw a teacher murdered at his own dinner table.
But then the Final Battle takes place and something ignites inside of Narcissa and she is defiant. She practically hands Voldemort to Harry Potter on a silver platter, alliances be damned, because her son-whom she would move mountains for-is still alive and well and betraying Voldemort is her only out to be able to get back to Draco. And when Voldemort’s dead, they don’t run away. They sit there, in that castle, because they know if they run, if they try to hide, they’ll be caught. And they’ll be split up. They know that beyond a shadow of a doubt. At least if they stay and show they’re not on Voldemort’s side anymore, there’s a possibility they’ll be allowed to remain together.
Don’t you dare ever tell me the Malfoys didn’t love each other. That’s all they ever did throughout the entire blessed series, the best way they knew how.
I did everything wrong. I managed to fall over even when I was standing still. I walked into a bush and my eye went blood red. I broke my finger!
